Nifty IT Surged 18.4% in July. How a CFO Reads a 'Reverse AI Trade' Rally.

The Nifty IT index logged its best monthly gain in six years in July 2026, surging 18.4% and adding ₹3.9 trillion in investor wealth, as global AI-related stocks sold off and capital rotated back into India's under-owned IT services sector — what analysts are calling the 'reverse AI trade.'

Something unusual just happened in Indian markets. Global tech — chips, AI plays, US hyperscalers — got hammered in July. And Indian IT, which spent the last 18 months being written off as the 'AI victim,' quietly posted its best month since 2020.

The phrase doing the rounds is 'reverse AI trade': money that chased NVIDIA and its friends is now rotating into undervalued Indian services companies. Nifty IT added ₹3.9 trillion in a single month. That is not a rounding error.

Here is how a CFO reads a move like this: she does not chase the headline. She asks what changed in the fundamentals. The honest answer is — not much, yet. Q1 FY27 earnings for TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech were stable, not spectacular. Deal pipelines are healthy. Management commentary is 'incrementally constructive.' That is analyst-speak for 'less bad.'

What actually moved the stock is the valuation gap closing. When AI darlings correct, the price-to-earnings multiple on Indian IT starts to look attractive relative to alternatives. That is a re-rating driven by relative value, not by earnings acceleration. A CFO watching her own company's valuation would flag this distinction immediately: a stock re-rating on sentiment feels like wealth, but it is fragile until the revenue growth follows.

The module lesson: valuation is not just a DCF model. It is the market's live vote on your earnings quality, growth visibility, and how you look relative to everything else competing for the same rupee.
