Bajaj Finance: PAT +27%, Stock -5.5%. How a CFO Reads That Contradiction.

On August 7, 2026, Bajaj Finance reported Q1 FY27 net profit up 27% YoY to ₹5,986 crore, NII up 23%, and AUM up 24% to ₹5.47 lakh crore — yet the stock tanked 5.5% to ₹1,086, erasing over ₹33,500 crore of market cap in barely an hour.

Profit up 27%. Revenue up 23%. Loan book up 24%. And the stock drops 5.5% in sixty minutes. If you're new to finance, that looks like the market lost its mind.

It didn't. Here's how a CFO reads this.

A CFO doesn't stop at PAT (profit after tax). They go straight to the ratio that tells you whether the *engine* is getting more or less efficient — in a bank or NBFC (non-banking finance company, essentially a lender that isn't a bank), that ratio is the Net Interest Margin, or NIM. NIM is the spread between what you earn on loans and what you pay on deposits or borrowings. It is the gross margin of a lending business.

SBI, also reporting this week, showed its domestic NIM tick up 7 basis points sequentially to 3%. Markets liked that. Bajaj Finance's NIM trajectory, combined with analyst concern that RBI's tighter regulations could increase credit costs and compress return ratios going forward, told a different story — strong today, uncertain tomorrow.

A CFO would ask: is profit growing because the business is genuinely more efficient, or because the loan book just got bigger? Volume growth flatters PAT. Margin compression quietly kills it later. The market, pricing the future, chose to worry about the 'later'.

Ratio Analysis isn't just scorecard reading. It's the CFO's way of separating noise from signal — and sometimes, a +27% profit headline is the noise.
