SpaceX Revenue +92%. Stock -8%. How a CFO Reads the $18.4B CapEx Problem.

SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) posted Q2 2026 revenue of $7.81 billion — up 92% year-on-year and well above the $6.93 billion consensus — with its net loss narrowing to $541 million and adjusted EBITDA surging 191% to $3.5 billion. Yet shares fell ~8% in after-hours trading after the company disclosed $18.4 billion in capital expenditures for the quarter, nearly double Q1's spend, directed almost entirely at AI infrastructure.

Revenue beat. Loss beat. EBITDA nearly tripled. And the stock still dropped 8%. That's the kind of headline that confuses a first-time reader — and tells a CFO everything.

Here's how a CFO reads it. The P&L looked great. But a CFO immediately flips to the cash flow statement and asks one question: what's Free Cash Flow? FCF = Operating Cash Flow minus Capital Expenditure (CapEx — the money a company spends on physical or digital assets that will last beyond one year). SpaceX spent $18.4 billion in capex this quarter alone — nearly double last quarter's $10.1 billion — mostly building AI compute infrastructure. No matter how strong your EBITDA is, CapEx that large will crater your Free Cash Flow into deeply negative territory.

This is the core tension in capital-intensive businesses: you can be operationally profitable and still be burning cash at a furious rate. EBITDA measures earnings before you pay for the machines. FCF measures what's actually left after you do.

A CFO would ask: is this capex discretionary or committed? Can the AI revenue ($2.6 billion this quarter, up ~250%) actually justify an $18.4 billion bet — every single quarter? And if not, when does the cash balance of ~$93.5 billion run out?

For founders: your investors will eventually make this same trip — from your revenue line straight down to Free Cash Flow. Build the story for both stops.
